Coming to Bluray from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment and director Shinji Aramaki is the sci-fi hit APPLESEED ALPHA.

This animated film tells the story of Deunan (Luci Christian), a young and very rugged female soldier who has survived World War 3. Along with her cyborg partner and Briareos (David Matranga) they are wandering the city of New York. Their goal is to find the city of Olympus.

While looking for clues they work for the warlord Two Horns (Wendel Calvert) trying to rid the city of combat machines. In the mist of a shootout they save Iris (Brina Palencia) and Olson (Adam Gibbs). This mysterious duo become their new companions and the soldiers discover someone at Triton is after Iris and will do anything to get her!

Deunan and Briareos choose to go after Iris to save humanity’s last hope!

Director Aramaki has also directed HALO LEGENDS, VIPER’S CREED, GASARAKI, MEGAZONE 23 and STARSHP TROOPERS: INVASION. As a designer Aramaki it is amazing how many of these I knew (thanks to my sons) with THE TRANSFORMERS television series for mechanical design along with DIGIMON TAMERS, along with 25 other mechanical and production designs.

TUBS OF POPCORN: I give APPLESEED ALPHA three and a half tubs of popcorn out of five. I’ve never really seen an animated film like this before mainly because it isn’t usually on my radar. I have to say I really enjoyed this. There are two other films APPLESEED (2004) and APPLESEED EX MACHINA that prequel this and based on the comic book creator of GHOST IN THE SHELL.

The animation is amazing and so beautifully done that it’s easy to forget that these characters are not ‘human’ for lack of a better word. They move and flow so well with scene cuts that you’d expect in an action film. Briareos looks top notch and very cool! The action if fast paced and the setting is pretty stellar.

Set in the 22nd century there is everything you’d expect to see along with the rugged characters who fight for what is right and not what is popular.

The Bluray includes a Filmmakers Commentary along with an In-Depth 11-Park Making-of Documentary about APPLESEED ALPHA.

In the end – to find Olympus they must fight to survive!
