On Bluray this week from director Lu Yang and Well Go USA is the stunning story with equally cool martial arts with BROTHERHOOD OF THE BLADES.

It is 1627 and the Ming dynasty is coming to its end. The emperor has decided to purse his empire and needs to rid himself of Wei (Chin Shi-Chieh) who has many supporters.

Three warriors from the Imperial Assassins – Lu (Wang Qianyan), Shen Lian (Chang Chen) and Yichuan (Ethan Li) are called upon to end his life.

Each of the assassins has reasons for needing money. From love to wanting a better life for family, Emperor Chongzhen (Ye Xiang Ming) uses it to his advantage.

Shen wants more than anything to free a young woman whose past is his secret, Yichuan is finding romance with a physician’s daughter but has his own secret from the past and Lu has been trying to rise in the ranks but through a politician’s bribery.

As each man attempts to do what is asked of them, what they don’t know is the end result has already been determined with a conspiracy in the brotherhood.

FINAL WORD: Chen as Shen Lian has the most heart breaking part of the storyline. Taking pride in being part of the Imperial Assassins, he doesn’t always agree with their methods. It is clear that there is a sadness he carries that will come to the surface. The dedication of Shen’s character to his brothers is endearing. Chen certainly performs the martial arts scenes in a seriously fast paced and his performance is spot on.

Li as Yichuan is a young man with a past that he is hiding fairly well. That is until he falls for the physician’s daughter. Returning often to be treated, he spends time with the young woman hoping for a future.

Lu leads the group of three and has tried everything to move up in the ranks. When his opportunity arises, he doesn’t feel honorable and that is his secret.

Other cast include: Liu Shishi as Zhou Miao Tong, Nie Yuan as Zhao Jing Zhong, Chin Shi-chieh as Wei Zhong Xian, Ye Qing as Zhang Yan, Zhou Yiwei as Zhou Yi Wei, Zhu Dan a Wei Ting, and Zhao Lixin as Han Kuang.

TUBS OF POPCORN: I give BROTHERHOOD OF THE BLADES four tubs of popcorn out of five. This film is such a grand mix of storyline, period piece, martial arts and amazing costumes. What I truly enjoyed about the film was the separate tales of each of the three assassins meshed in to the main story of betrayal.

The martial arts are well done and stunningly executed in this beautifully costumed period piece. Each character and their story are so intense on its own but once added to the main story it’s a brilliant blended story.

The film was nominated for four Golden Horse Awards in 2014 including Chang Chen for Best Actor, Chin Shih-chieh for Best Supporting Actor and Sang Lin for Best Action Choreography. Tingting Liang received an award from Golden Horse for Best Makeup & Costume Design. BROTHERHOOD OF BLADES Bluray includes Bonus Features and an English Language track.

Well Go USA Entertainment is an amazing company that brings the best of Action and Independent films from around the world. There format includes theatres, digital, cable and VOD along with Bluray. For more of what they have to offer go to www.wellgousa.com.
