FREE Appreciation Event to Help Military Families Prepare for Back-to-School

WHAT: San Diego Unified School District serves more than 13,000 military-connected families each year. Many are new to the area with students who will be entering a new school in September. To help make the transition easier for these families and get a head-start on back-to-school preparations, the district, along with the Navy and the Marine Corp, is hosting a Military Appreciation Event. The event, sponsored by International Relief, is free and open to all military families living within the service boundaries of San Diego Unified School District. All attendees will receive a free lunch and students will receive free school supplies.

WHEN: Saturday, Aug. 9, 2014
7-9 a.m. Set-up by hundreds of volunteers, including Navy and Marine Corps personnel

9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Hundreds of families will have the opportunity to gather helpful information from community organizations and district offices; participate in activities and games; and receive required immunizations if needed.

11 a.m. Recognition Ceremony with San Diego Unified Supt. Cindy Marten; Col. John P. Farnam, Commanding Officer, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar; and CAPT Curt Jones, Commanding Officer, Naval Base San Diego

11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Free BBQ Lunch

WHERE: Serra High School, 5156 Santo Road, San Diego (92124)

INTERVIEWS: Military families, personnel and volunteers; staff and volunteers from San Diego Unified; and representatives from more than 50 community agencies. Supt. Cindy Marten, Col. John P. Farnam, and CAPT Curt Jones will be available between 11 a.m. and noon.
