Coming to DVD from director Kwak Kyung-taek and CJ Entertainment is the long awaited sequel with FRIEND 2: The Legacy.
This tells the story of Lee Joon-Seok (Yu Oh-Seong) who is being released after a seventeen year prison sentence for the murder of his friend – a murder he did not commit. Now, he returns to the organization in Busan that knew him as a boss. Eun-ki still sees Joon-Seok as the next leader but it will take some doing to make it happen.
He also befriends young Sung-hoon (Kim Woo-bin) when the boy’s mother is worried for him. Getting out of prison for beating his mother’s boyfriend, Sung-hoon follows Joon-Seok and does what is necessary to return him to power.
As secrets slowly come to the surface, old friends once again must decide where there allegiances lie. Much of what will happen has happened before challenging friendship and a gangster code.
When Sung-hoon discovers the truth about his mentor, the line between friendship is very, very thin!
FINAL WORD: Oh-Seong as Joon-Seok is not only a man with a powerful secret but also a man who knows when it’s time to walk away. He may just do that, but not before attempting to set things straight with a few people.
Woo-bin as Sung-hoon is a young man just starting out in life. Watching his mother deal with men who steal and beat her brings up something violent in the boy which lands him in prison. Joon-Seok is the father figure he’s been looking for and the pain he discovers is intense.
The DVD includes bonus material of Making-of Friend II: The Legacy Featurette, Characters, Interviews with Cast & Crew, and Trailers.
Other cast include: Joo Hin-mo as Lee Chul-joo, Jang Young-nam as Hye-ji, Jung Ho-bin as Eun-ki, Gi Ju-bong as Hung-doo and Lee Cheol-min asWig.
TUBS OF POPCORN: I give FRIEND 2: The Legacy three and a half tubs of popcorn out of five. There are moments of raw emotion surrounded by gangster action as the baton is passed from one generation to another. The scene between mentor and young man is very moving – yes, in a gangster movie!
This film isn’t all smack ‘em down as the storyline allows the secrets to be revealed exactly when they are suppose to. No one character pulls the story which is a high praise for the films director.
FRIENDS II: The Legacy received a nominator for Best Actor: Kim Woo-bin by the 2014 Baeksang Arts Award. Director Kwak Kyung-taek brought the film FRIEND to theatres back in 2001 with a storyline of old friends becoming enemies receiving the Holden Award from the Torino Film Festival. He followed it up with the 2003 boxing film CHAMPION.
In the end – the legacy comes full circle!
