Opening August 17th at the Egyptian Theatre is one of the most beautiful stories we should have known about one of the most famous whales with Keiko: The Untold Story of the Star of FREE WILLY.
This film tells the story of Keiko or as most know him as Willy from the 1993 hit film FREE WILLY. From his small beginnings in the oceans of Norway during his capture to his travel from one theme park aquarium to another, his quality of living just diminished.
Found by Hollywood in an aquarium in Mexico, it was thought that Keiko was the perfect whale to star in the film FREE WILLY. It would have been quite easy for everyone to walk away when the film was wrapped up but that’s not what happened.
Instead, Keiko had gotten inside the hearts and minds of those who spent time around him and a movement began.
FINAL WORD: This truly is an amazing documentary. Instead of being afraid to tell the history of Keiko, everything is revealed. From the sad beginnings to his fight to try to live in two worlds he definitely is one of a kind.
Some people don’t believe that these magnificent animals have the ability to convey strong emotions. Keiko is definitely the proof that this is not true. He had clear emotions about the his human caregivers just as he had emotions being with his own kind.
The film garnered awards from Accolade Films, American International, Golden Eagle Award, Indie Fest, First Glance, and official selection from over 16 film festivals.
TUBS OF POPCORN: I give Keiko: The Untold Story of the Star of FREE WILLY four tubs of popcorn out of five.
In the end – he is the ambassador for freedom!
