Rachel Finks, of San Diego, California, has been an Air Traffic Controller in the Navy for six years. Finks is serving on her second deployment as part of Tactical Air Control Squadron 21 embarked on USS Bataan (LHD 5).

“I joined the Navy because all my uncles and my father were in the Navy and it always interested me that they experienced different cultures while serving,” said Finks. “I like the fact that I am always challenged and there is always something I can learn from or about.”

Bataan is deployed in the U.S. Navy 5th Fleet Area of Responsibility (AOR). Bataan departed from Naval Station Norfolk for an eight-month deployment Feb. 8.

The deployment is part of a regular rotation of forces to support maritime security operations, provide crisis response capability, and increase theater security cooperation and forward naval presence in the U.S Navy’s 5th and 6th Fleet AOR.
