Commander, Navy Medicine West (NMW) and Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD) Rear Adm. Bruce L. Gillingham is scheduled to relinquish command of NMCSD to Capt. Jose Acosta in a traditional change of command ceremony here Oct. 10 at 11 a.m.

Gillingham assumed command of NMW and NMCSD on Dec. 4, 2013. Gillingham will maintain command and control of NMW, an echelon 3 headquarters element with 10 subordinate military treatment facilities (MTFs) comprised of 16,800 staff and a $1.3 billion budget, providing care to more than 850,000 beneficiaries across the Western Pacific.

Most recently, Acosta held the position of U.S. Fleet Forces (USFF) Surgeon and Director, Health Services, US Fleet Forces Command in Norfolk, Va. In this role he was the principal medical advisor to the Commander and was responsible for organizing, training and equipping health support services to meet the needs and operations of the worldwide fleet.
