The Cathedral Catholic High School lacrosse teams will hold their annual Military Appreciation Day on March 23, benefiting the Warrior Foundation and the Navy SEAL Foundation.

The girls’ and boys’ varsity lacrosse teams will each play a home game, interspersed with a special performance by the U.S. Navy Parachute Team and presentation of colors by the U.S. Marine Corps Color Guard. The Cathedral Catholic Boys and Girls Lacrosse teams first organized this event last year to show their support for the military and hope to raise even more funds this year.

The San Diego-based Warrior Foundation assists four main groups of warriors: the seriously injured just returning home from war; those suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder or traumatic brain injury; those undergoing physical or occupational therapy, and warriors who have been medically retired and remain in our community. To serve this last group in particular, Warrior Foundation pioneered a new approach and opened Freedom Station – a unique recovery transition center and housing facility that provides injured warriors with the acclimation time, guidance and resources to successfully make the transition from military service to civilian life.

The highlight of Military Appreciation Day will be a performance by the United States Navy Parachute Team, commonly known as the Leap Frogs. This all-volunteer team consists of active-duty personnel drawn from Naval Special Warfare, including Navy SEALs, Special Warfare Combatant-craft Crewmen and support personnel. The Leap Frogs will exit an aircraft and land on the field at Cathedral Catholic High School’s Manchester Stadium. During the performance, jumpers deploy their distinctive blue and gold parachutes and often activate smoke grenades during freefall flight to make it easier for spectators to see them. Once under canopy, jumpers maneuver toward each other to create various formations. The last jumper to land typically trails an American flag.

Military Appreciation Day begins at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 23 at Cathedral Catholic High School’s Manchester Stadium, located 5555 Del Mar Heights Road in San Diego. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students and senior citizens. Children under 10 and active duty military are free. Tickets can be purchased on site at the event.
