Bringing fans only the best, SHOUT! Factory has done it again bringing PEEWEE’S PLAYHOUSE: The Complete Series to Bluray!

Yes, I said it and something tells me you’d like to know more so let’s get to it. Actor Paul Reubens, in 1980, created a stage production called The Pee-wee Herman Show. Along with the main character Pee-wee, there is Captain Carl, Jambi the Genie, Miss Yvonne, Pterri the Pterodactyl and Clock featured in the show.

At the same time, Pee-wee gets a leg up when director Tim Burton brings PEE-WEE’S BIG ADVENTURE to the screen and it becomes a hit bringing in more fans. It would be the following year that Reubens’ agrees to do a live-action children’s show for the Saturday morning audience.

Now, Reubens assembles a new cast that include Phil Hartman, John Paragon, Lynne Stewart, Laurence Fishburne and Epatha Merkerson. Based on the 1950’s shows he was raised on, Reubens gears the show towards kids and adults. It’s a combination of kids getting full on fun and parents seeing a little nostalgia.

Each episode began with a ‘secret word’ as the audience awaits to hear the word so they could scream out loud – this worked because I remember clearly thinking back then when my kids went nuts that it was okay because ‘Pee-wee said they could’.

The music came from the likes of Mark Mothersbaugh, The Residents, Todd Rundgren, Mitchell Froom, George S. Clinton and Dweezil Zappa. Danny Elfman also wrote music for the series as well as providing the score for Reubens’ films.

It was hilarious to once again see Laurence Fishburne as Cowboy Curtis. I had all but forgotten the singing cowboy. To see Phil Hartman as Captain Carl was a fond memory as well.

Of course who can forget the charm of Chairry, Magic Screen, Clocky, Cool Cat, Dirty Dog, Chicky Baby, Penny, and the Dinosaur family!

But these aren’t the only names to step foot in the playhouse – check out Sandra Bernhard, Jimmy Smits as well as a Christmas special with Annette Funicello, Frankie Avalon, Magic Johnson, Joan Rivers, Whoopie Goldberg, Cher and Grace Jones.

PEE-WEE’S PLAYHOUSE won over 22 Emmy Awards for everything from Outstanding Makeup, Scenic Design, Sound Mixing and Art Direction. TV Guide named this how #10 of The Top 25 Cult Television Shows and I couldn’t agree more.

The Bluray contains 45 episodes including Pee-wee’s Playhouse Christmas Special. That’s over 18 hours of fun, comedy. Also included are four hours of interviews from cast and crew, behind-the-scene footage and ten featurettes including: Building the Playhouse, Opening the Playhouse, Writing for the Playhouse, The Look of the Playhouse, The Cast of the Playhouse, Puppets of the Playhouse, Animating the Playhouse, A Very Merry Christmas Special, and Fans and Memorabilia of the Playhouse.

SHOUT! Factory is an amazing company that brings the best of pop culture to fans who want just that as part of their home entertainment. From DVD to Bluray, they offer up feature films, classic television series, animation, comedy and live music, they don’t miss a thing when it comes bringing the quality home. FINAL WORD AND TUBS OF POPCORN: First of all, I give PEE-WEE’S PLAYHOUSE: The Complete Series five tubs of popcorn out of five. I actually planned to sit and watch each episode back to back and it is amazing. Re-mastered in High-Definition, this 8-disc box set brings back everything amazing about the show.

From amazing sets, to loveable memorable characters, each episode continues to bring something to fans. Taken from the original 16mm tapes and transferred to HD bring out the amazing color and absolutely dazzle – yes, I’m kind of giddy about it.

“We could not be more excited to collaborate with Paul Reubens on this fantastic venture. PEE-WEE’S PLAYHOUSE is a cultural touchstone for a generation, and its visually dynamic design and offbeat sense of humor were a genuine phenomenon”, says SHOUT! Factory founders Richard & Garson Foos and Bob Emmer. “Fans will experience PEE-WEE’S PLAYHOUSE as never before and share it with a new generation audience.”

This was the best way to enjoy Pee-wee and the gang, with no interruptions, cell phone off and snacks at the ready. Each episode made me laugh, giggle, yell out the ‘secret word’ (much to the freak out of my cat) and laugh even more. Not only is it a great memory for kids who watched the show on Saturday morning but also parents like myself who remember those same Saturdays.
