Opening in theatres this Friday from director Carlos Saldanha and Blue Sky Studios comes the night flight to RIO 2.
This film tells the story Blu (voiced by Jesse Eisenberg) and his love Jewel (Anne Hathaway). Now with a family of their own life is good in Rio. That is until Linda (Leslie Mann) and Tulio (Rodrigo Santoro) discover more blue Macaws in the Amazon.
Jewel is excited and wants to take the kids to experience life with more of their own kind. Blu isn’t quite as excited but will do anything for Jewel. So, packing his birdie fanny pack containing all the things necessary for travel the family takes off. But they aren’t alone as Rafael (George Lopez) and the gang comes along for the ride.
But evil lurks in the Amazon as Big Boss (Miguel Ferrer) runs an illegal tree cutting and logging operation. Another creepy winged evil is the return of Nigel (Jermaine Clement) who is looking for revenge.
Upon arriving in the Amazon, they quickly find life is about to change as Jewel finds her father Eduardo (Andy Garcia). She also reunited with childhood friend Roberto (Bruno Mars) and Blu gets a little jealous.
Life in the wild just got a whole lot more interesting!
FINAL WORD: Eisenberg reprises his vocal role as Blu. He continues to be a little neurotic, a little freaked out by life and wants the kids to have the life he does. Definitely a Minnesota bird at heart, he does try to fit in but just doesn’t understand how. Eisenberg really does have Blu down pat and fans all over love him for it.
Hathaway as Jewel gets to spread her wings in this film. Finding her family and bringing her own young ones back to the group is very endearing. She certainly has so much fun reacquainting with the feathered traditions and sort of forgetting that Blu is kind of confused by it all. But when it comes down to it Jewel will stand by her man – or bird.
Mann as Linda repeats her scattered yet smart role. Hanging out with Tulio in the jungle the couple is just a hot funny mess. Santoro as Tulio is looking for the big discovery but learns that what’s important is right in front of him. Together they are unstoppable!
Garcia as Pop-pop is the typical happy Grandfather and equally unhappy father-in-law. He does his best to make Blu feel as if he is just not worthy. To make sure of it Mars as Roberto comes in to charm Jewel – and the rest of the feathery females.
Clement as Nigel is deliciously evil, even if he just can’t seem to get the job done. He made me laugh a lot. Lopez returns as the wise and wise-cracking Toucan Rafael. Ferrer as Big Boss uses his husky scratchy voice to terrorize everyone in the jungle!
Other cast: Will I Am as Pedro, Amandla Stenberg as Bia, Tracy Morgan as Luiz, Rita Moreno as Aunt Mimi, Jake T. Austin as Fernando, Kristin Chenoweth as Gabi, Rachel Crow as Carla, and Jamie Foxx as Nico.
TUBS OF POPCORN: I give RIO 2 three and a half tubs of popcorn out of five. The film is full of vibrant colors, catchy tunes and characters is every sense of that word. It is very funny and endearing with its focus on family. With the holiday weekend coming up this is just the film to see.
Do I find anything wrong with the film? There are a few things that stand out and it could be considered knit picking – I find the storyline of the deforestation old hat. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t like the deforestation but I don’t think in this particular film it works. I personally would have enjoyed the story having more with the rift between the two bird tribes and the return of Nigel. There was a lot of potential for that storyline.
This is definitely a family film but lets be honest here folks, it would make a fun date night film too! I have no doubt the theatre lines will be long as RIO 2
In the end – it’s on in the Amazon!
