Camp Pendleton’s top surfers to battle it out at “Red Bull Rivals” Night Surf Competition.

East Coast Marines and West Coast Marines to Face Off at the Del Mar Beach Resort at the Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton

WHAT: Red Bull Rivals returns to once again revisit the rivalry between Camp Pendleton Marines Corps personnel, who back when they were recruits, trained either on the West Coast at Camp Pendleton (stationed at MCRD San Diego) or on the East Coast at Parris Island Marines. The one-day contest will showcase fifteen surfers from each coast battling it out in a head-to-head surf competition in the restricted waters of Del Mar Jetty. This is the third time the event will take place at Camp Pendleton, and since the West Coast Marines won the first year, and the East Coast Marines won the second year, the July event will be somewhat of a tiebreaker and will once and for all define who is the best. As an added twist, the competition will take place when the sun goes down, testing the Marines’ night operations skillset, and providing an added challenge in judging the timing of the waves.

Red Bull Rivals is being held at Camp Pendleton and will only be open for viewing to those with base access. Instead of a traditional prize purse, the teams will compete for each other’s surfboards used in the competition (similar to racing for pink slips) as well as ultimate bragging rights. Unique to this contest, surfers will compete using a modified version of the National Surf Leagues Game format which works like a four-inning baseball game. One team from the East or West Coast will surf in the top half of the inning and the other team will surf in the bottom-half of the inning. The total inning score will consist of each active surfers highest scoring wave. Each team will consist of 15 athletes with seven to eight active surfers participating in each inning. Also, unique to this modified game format are the five timeouts allotted to each team for the entire game. Timeouts add an extra element of strategy as the competitors can use it to wait out a lull in the surf or allow an athlete to get into scoring position. The team with the highest cumulative score at the end of the four innings will give up their surfboards to the winning team

The Bull Rivals competing surfers earned their spot in the competition by winning the Camp Pendleton’s Commanding Generals Surf Tournament at San Onofre Beach on June 11, 2013.
