Coming to DVD this September from Time Life is one of the most iconic comediennes of all time with “The Carol Burnett Show: The Lost Episodes.”
“The Carol Burnett Show” was seen beginning in 1967 on CBS and after receiving twenty-five Emmy Awards and eight Golden Globes, TIME Magazine names it one of the “100 Best Television Shows of All Time” spending elevens years on television.
Unseen by fans for more than 40 years, this 6-disc collection brings Carol and a long time of guests back with episodes from the shows first five seasons. From 1967 to 1972, these lost episodes are hand picked by Carol Burnett herself which for me means so much since this was one of my favorite shows on television.
There are 16 episodes on the amazing set but even more thrilling is that there is nearly five hours of bonus features that have to be seen. The show features guests stars such as Lucille Ball, Carol Channing, Bing Crosby, Phyllis Diller, Steve Lawrence, Bob Newhart, Don Rickles, Chita Rivera, Burt Reynolds and my childhood comedic hero – Flip Wilson.
There are also interviews with Julie Andrews, Queen Latifah, Don Rickles, Bill Hader and an iconic actor in his own right Alan Alda.
Also included are: A Backstage Tour of CBS Studio 33, Exclusive Interviews, Never-Before-Seen Bloopers & Outtakes (which had me laughing out of my chair), Newly Produced Featurette, Bonus Sketches Including “Morton at the Movies” and the All-Time Classic “The Dentist”, and finally the opening number from the historic JULIE AND CAROL AT LINCOLN CENTER television special with a new introduction by Carol.
Classic skits that I’m so thrilled Ms. Burnett added to this collection are The Old Folks, Carol and Six, Alice Portnoy, V.I.P, George and Zelda, Charwoman and the best soap opera on television As the Stomach Turns!
This is a series that introduced the television to comedy in such a way that the memories have stayed with those of us who remember laughing at pure comedy. The fact that this six-disc set has been put together brings me more joy than I can say because now I can share with my kids what a variety comedy hour should look like today.
The laughs are absolutely endless because Ms. Burnett had and continues to have the amazing ability to know what is funny. I can say with all honesty there are very few comics that make me laugh but after spending time with this set, I am sincerely hoping that Ms. Burnett will put together another disc set of her favorites.
Get the family together, get the popcorn popped and sit together for a fun evening of brilliance comedy, silliness and characters that can never be repeated.
In the end — Carol Burnett reminds us why she is an icon!
