Being released from SHOUT! Factory on 4K UHD, 3D Bluray, Bluray and Digital from the creators of “Wild Ocean” is a glorious look beneath the surface at “The Last Reef: Cities Beneath the Sea.”
Shot on location in Palau, Vancouver Island, French Polynesia, Mexico and The Bahamas, the underwater technology made available today offers us all a look into a world like and unlike our own.
The idea behind “The Last Reef” is to show the connection between our cities above water and those that are just as important below the surface. From reefs to places offered up to the under water world, there is a cautionary tale to be told.
That tale starts with each one of us as the water becomes a breeding ground for trash, fuels, toxins and other traces that disturb the balance of the sea life that live in the reefs for example. There is something to be said for seeing these beautiful and strange creatures that may begin the conversation of ‘what can we do?’ to stop destroying our neighbors homes.
From the Sea Slugs that look like little aliens but are full of color and life to the Flat Worms that glide effortlessly waving their out thinness with grace, the film shows how we change their way of life. Reefs are the largest livable structures that can be seen from space so our big cities aren’t as impressive.
There are jellyfish who live for the sun in mangroves as both of these species protect one another because the reef systems are each so uniquely different. It is the reefs that are in danger as bleaching occurs since the microbes that live on the coral stop giving them energy and color.
Although the original reefs are disappearing at an alarming rate, there is also some hope knowing that reefs do have the amazing ability to grow in the most unusual places. Starting over and creating beauty from sunken ships, creative statues that live under water and structures meant to help reefs find a new home that will bring reef life back.
Through everything this film shares with the viewer one thing is extremely clear, we need to contribute to the recovery!

TUBS OF POPCORN: I give “The Last Reef: Cities Beneath the Sea” four tubs of popcorn out of five. I have to admit that I absolutely love watching documentaries that are done this well. “The Last Reef: Cities Beneath the Sea” is so stunning in color but equally beautiful in the way the story is captures.
There are so many sea creatures to know about and trust me, I had no idea Sea Slugs are so colorful and that Flat Worms are kind of cute. That’s the best part of having the opportunity to see this piece – learning something new about the planet we all share.
This is the perfect opportunity to be enlightened and entertained at the same time. Gather the family around for a life lesson with “The Last Reef: Cities Beneath the Sea.”
In the end – there are many cities and some lie beneath the sea!
