The Pirate of Massapequa follows the story of 94 year old, widowed, World War II veteran and DVD bootlegger, Hyman Strachman, affectionately known as “Big Hy” to many, who shares his passion for movies and his support of our military by donating DVDs to our troops overseas after the death of his wife. To date, he has sent over 400,000 DVD’s in 4,700 shipments, having spent $75,000 of his own money over the last decade.

Currently Strachman, who’s movie procurement of choice is spending hours each day scouring Ebay for DVD’s (he’s become concerned about breaking copyright laws with his pirating), has also received support from donors, including actor Zach Galifiankis, who has sent him hundreds of copies of his Hangover movies, many autographed and convinced video rental company Redbox to donate 10,000 DVDs directly to the USO.

Directed and produced by filmmaker, Steve Birnbaum, (who also produced and directed the short doc Lost Vegas, which premiered at the NYC DOC film festival), please visit www.bighyforheroes.com to watch the trailer for The Pirate of Massapequa and learn more about the film.
