Coming to Digital Download and DVD from director Jason R. Miller and Dark Sky Films comes the tale of UNIDENTIFIED.
This film tells the story of Jodi (Eric Artell), a young man who doesn’t quite fit in with others. A big fan of sci-fi and having his own web series, JodieMan, doesn’t help his case – especially when he goes on a trip to Vegas.
Along with his brother-in-law Nick (Eddie Mui), friends Jeremy (Parry Shen), and Dave (Colton Dunn) they load up and head out. Jodi has brought along his video camera to capture the fun or at least keep tabs on what the guys are doing.
Not there more than ten minutes it becomes clear to Jodi that the guys are taking money from a loan shark in order to play poker to win. Well, when that plan doesn’t exactly go well they head out of Vegas top speed.
In the middle of the Nevada desert they become stranded and spend the night hoping to get help in the morning. Instead they discover something has happened to Jodi – something they don’t understand but know is bad. So bad in fact it becomes clear that what is happening isn’t from this world.
As night falls again time is running out for them all!
FINAL WORD: Artell as Jodie is completely nerdy but in an awesome kind of way. From his character creations to his absolutely joy at seeing a DeLorean with a flux capacitor he seems more normal to me than the others. When Artell’s character changes it is very cool how he carries it off going from one extreme to the other.
Mui as Nick is a man who needs his ass whupp’d and it’s clear what Jodie is there for. That being said I think he is more of a handful than Artell’s character! Once he is in the desert, Mui’s character really begins to take shape and when crazy hits the proverbial fan he is the last man standing. I’m so curious how they filmed the last scene but really, I don’t want to know – it’s just too cool.
Dunn as Dave really does have problems, and I say this laughing. His poker game plan is nothing short of disturbing. He did make me laugh the most and in a storyline like this there has to be someone to break the tension.
Shen as Jeremy is that low-key guy who knows everything is messed up but goes along with everything anyway! Once in the desert he did get a little worked up and grossed out – but that scene would gross anybody out. Unless you like the YouTube videos showing that very thing. No I’m not going to spoil it – watch the movie!
UNIDENTIFIED, along with director Miller is produced by Parry Shen and Eddie Mui. The DVD includes special features such as: Commentary with writer/director Jason R. Miller, Jodieman YouTube Videos, Unidentified Space Cam and the trailer for the film.
Other cast include: Beth Alspaugh, Erik Aude, Matt Corboy, Dana Davidson, Brian T. Finney, Marlene Forte, David Foy, Jennifer Gonzalez and Derek Lux.
TUBS OF POPCORN: I give UNIDENTIFIED three tubs of popcorn out of five. The last half of the film is absolutely fantastic and hits all the alien horror films with a few other tidbits that I got a kick out of. Filmed the BLAIR WITCH-ian style it takes it a step further with the up in the air scenes.
The beginning was funny and if I had one thing to point out it would be that the Vegas stuff took too long because honestly, I wanted more of the desert stuff. But then again it doesn’t take away from the film either. Does this leave the door open for a sequel? I could see how the answer might be yes!
