Coming to DVD from director Tsui Hark and Well Go USA Entertainment comes action and intrigue with YOUNG DETECTIVE DEE.

This film tells the story of Detective Dee (Mark Chao), a young man sent to the Imperial capital to start his duties as an officer of the law. He isn’t there long before he’s arrested for trying to save Yin Ruiji (Angelababy), a stunning courtesan who is captured by a strange creature.

Chief Minister Yuchi (Feng Shaofeng), is appointed by the Empress Wu (Carina Lau) to find out the strange happens of the Sea Dragon who has sunk man of the Emperors ships! With his keen senses and memory, Detective Dee tries to discover if the Sea Creature who tried to kidnap Ruiji has anything to do with the Sea Dragon.

Yuchi and Dee don’t always see eye to eye but one thing is clear – they both want to find answers before the creatures strike again.

What they don’t expect is what they find!

FINAL WORD: Chao as Detective Dee is smart, funny, witty and never lets clue get past him. It took me a while to keep up with his train of thought and wow did he ever move fast and with a purpose. Chao’s portrayal is excellent and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Shaofeng as Yuchi is a hard man who clearly doesn’t like his authority tested. Realizing that Dee is a force of intelligence to deal with he does realize at some point that his help is needed. Always sharp he wants to keep his position with the Empress and will do what is necessary to find the creature!

Angelababy as Yin Ruiji is absolutely stunning. From her costuming to her very elegant nature she is just a joy to watch. Her character could have easily been a weak one but instead she is strong as well as intelligent.

Lau as Empress Wu has her own issues to deal with as she sees Yin Ruiji as a threat or a pawn in her own game of jealousy. Either way she is a force to be reckoned with and stands proud doing it.

TUBS OF POPCORN: I give YOUNG DETECTIVE DEE: Rise of the Sea Dragon three and a half tubs of popcorn out of five. The story is definitely intricate and keeps the film flowing so well. The graphics are amazing and the costuming is, as always, stunning.

There is plenty of action and martial arts mixed in amazingly with the story keeps the viewer on their toes. It’s interesting to watch the puzzle come together and missing little things that catch Detective Dee’s attention. It has a great Sherlock Holmes feel as well which I enjoyed very much.

In the end – it is an adventure from the sea!
