Preparations are underway for the May 19 commissioning of the USS San Diego, newly homeported in San Diego. The Amphibious Transport Dock ship is currently docked at 32nd Street Naval Base. The ship was built in Pascagoula, Mississippi, where its sea trails were conducted. The vessel is the fourth ship to bear the name USS San Diego.

Beginning Tuesday, May 15 through Thursday, May 17, tours will held that are open to the public. There are strict security rules in place. Anyone 18 and older will be asked to show federal or state photo I.D. and minors must be accompanied by an adult with valid I.D.

Once it is commissioned on Saturday, May 19, the USS San Diego and its crew of up to 700 is expected to begin sea trials to test the ship’s systems and complete certifications.
