I remember the first time I went to a fashion show; it was the Ebony Fashion Show that used to travel all over the world. It was very glamorous, classy, and the models were so beautiful and exotic looking to me. But that was in the late 80’s and 90’s, now fast forward to 2015 and it’s Fashion Week in NYC where they are practically snowed in and definitely showcasing a lot of fur.

I’ve attended many fashion shows in NYC and while they can be pretty awesome and lots of star gazing, I still find it equally as interesting to attend fashion shows in other various cities beside NYC. But NYC is quite unique because not only do they feature NYC Fashion Week where the upper echelon of designers showcase their wears, such as: Gloria, Michael, Oscar, etc.; their first names alone are so big that you already know their last.

Even Kanye had a show recently where his daughter had her own show via her mother’s lap while sitting on the front row right next to the queen of Vogue, Ms. Devil Wears Prada herself (Anna Wintour) who didn’t appear to be too keen on having a toddler sitting next to her throwing a tantrum!

I thoroughly enjoyed Brooklyn Fashion Week, Bronx Fashion, and I’m just discovering Harlem Fashion Row whose show I’m hoping to attend in September. It’s a fashion show that is very new to me and from first glance seems to be as equally intriguing as NYC Fashion Week. I’m impressed by its origin to highlight and showcase designers of diverse backgrounds because they are SO severely left out of the bigger fashion shows. I was indeed proud to learn that the creator of Harlem Fashion Row is from my home city and state of Memphis, TN…….. so you know I have to meet this person!!!

NYC was overrun with athletes as well pre fashion week due to the NBA All-Star game in town where they too featured a fashion show with current players strutting on the runway and former players as the judges. I’ve often felt that sports and fashion should be comingling, glad to see that others thought it was a good idea as well. So in case you missed it, the link below will show you the highlights: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5kdq6RS6y1w

Another reason why NYC is so unique during fashion week is that practically every major show is showcased on the news, highlighted in the paper, and thanks to the power of the internet is all over YouTube now as well. So now I can watch at my leisure without breaking out my fur coat too! LOL!

WWD (Women’s Wear Daily) features quite a few shows as well on their site where you can get a front row seat to a lot of them or again, just look them up on YouTube! I practically enjoyed the Michael Kors and Tracy Reese……..absolutely fabulous!!!!

So fashionistas, enjoy this very unique time in fashion as we await another great and even bigger event come September, Fashion Night Out.

Until next time my Veteran Fashionistas, as always, stay fashionable!
